Vegan Copper Cup Lassi Smoothie Bowl Recipe

Posted by Andrea Slinde on

Okay so this recipe seems like a bit of a word salad, but I promise the results will be worth it! Let’s dissect each word, starting with ‘Lassi’. A lassi is a traditional Indian yogurt-based beverage that is typically a creamy, smooth, mango flavor. Think of it like a mango milkshake. Lassi drinks are served cold as a refreshing beverage on a hot day or while eating spicy Indian cuisine. Most lassi’s have savory spices like cardamom or ginger to balance the sweet fruit flavor, so we thought it would be only fitting to add our Copper Cup turmeric latte mix!

We put a vegan spin on this recipe by substituting the traditional dairy yogurt base with organic coconut milk & almond milk. We then threw the blended beverage into a bowl and added texture with some nutrient dense toppers. This recipe tastes how I imagine liquid gold would taste. It tastes incredible. My favorite part is the unsweetened coconut flakes that freeze in the smoothie bowl to add the perfect crunch factor.

Yield: 1-2 servings
Prep time: 10 minutes

Ingredients for Smoothie:
1 banana
1 cup frozen mango
1/2 cup ice
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 piece raw ginger
1 piece raw turmeric
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
1/4 cup almond milk
1/2 cup full fat coconut milk
1 tablespoon Nutiva coconut oil
1 sachet or 1 Tbsp of Copper Cup turmeric latte mix

Optional Toppings:
Chia seeds
Banana slices
Unsweetened coconut flakes
Love Grown Raisin Almond Crunch granola

Instructions:
Put all ingredients for the smoothie into a blender and blend until smooth. Add more almond milk to adjust consistency. Pour contents into 1-2 bowls and add arrange desired toppings.

Why "Copper Cup"?

Posted by Kat Koh on

In India, many start the day by drinking a cup of cleansed and ionized water that sat overnight in a copper cup. This therapeutic water, called tamra jal, has a host of health benefits including boosting immunity, reducing inflammation in the body, and conducting spiritual energy. It is typically consumed by yogis first thing in the morning as part of daily meditation practice.

We named our company Copper Cup partly as a bow to the Ayurvedic roots of haldi ka doodh (turmeric milk), but more because we love the transformative power of the copper cup. It resonates strongly with us.

What we believe

  1. Offer the right nourishment to the body, and it heals itself.
  2. Place someone in the right environment, and they will transform to their highest good.
  3. Mother Nature is really smart.

Our friend Roman has called us a "good business trying to spread healthy life choices." That's exactly what we're trying to do, one cup at a time.

Why We Changed Our Name

Posted by Kat Koh on

Thanks to y’all’s support, we are seriously rocking it. You can get find us at twenty Bluestone Lane locations in New York & Philadelphia; Contraband Coffee Bar in San Francisco; Bernie’s cafes in San Francisco; Bindle Coffee in Fort Collins, CO, and SloHi in Denver!

We’ve had so many wins, and seriously: starting a new business is tough. We’ve gotten really comfortable with making mistakes.

Most of them we don’t need to tell you guys about — we know you just want a great experience ordering, receiving and drinking our delicious product. But this one mistake needs to be shared. It’s a bigger one that affects you as a customer. Honestly, we were embarrassed at first.

How We Named Ourselves

We named Golden Chai pretty quickly. It felt right, you know? This was essentially our thought process, super boiled-down:

  1. “We ❤ turmeric milk.”
  2. “We want to make it and drink it faster.”
  3. “Let’s come up with an awesome powdered recipe.” (Check!)
  4. “It’s such a beautiful color. Golden…”
  5. “Chai and cha mean “tea” in so many cultures…”
  6. “GOLDEN CHAI!”

We really loved our name. It rolls off the tongue, and in many ways makes you feel the way it feels when you drink our product: warm, balanced, comforted, centered. But there was one pretty big problem…

The Conversation We’ve Had Too Many Times

Cool, smart person: So, what do you do?

Adam/Andrea/Glenn/Kat: I started a turmeric latte mix company called Golden Chai!

Cool, smart person: Ooh, I love chai!

Adam/Andrea/Glenn/Kat: Yeah, it’s not actually a chai…

Cool, smart person: What? But your name is…

Adam/Andrea/Glenn/Kat: I know, it’s confusing right… sorry. We’re actually a turmeric latte mix…

The Problem

We hadn’t considered that to a lot of people, “chai” means Indian chai. Indian chai specifically has:

  1. Black tea
  2. Cardamom
  3. Cinnamon
  4. Ginger
  5. Peppercorns
  6. Plenty of sugar to bring out above flavors

Our recipe, on the other hand, has:

  1. No caffeine (a signature aspect of our product)
  2. No cardamom
  3. No cinnamon (we let you add that)
  4. Yes, ginger.
  5. Yes, black pepper.
  6. Very little sugar (a point of pride)

So you see the problem. We’re not an Indian chai at all.

We love chai too! It’s delicious. But what we’re trying to deliver is altogether different: a caffeine-free, energizing, low-in-sugar beverage mix.

The New Name

We're now Copper Cup Turmeric Latte! We officially launch the new brand October 4th - 7th. Stay tuned for the story behind our name!
